Choosing Yoga over Diet Culture as a Fat Person

Choosing Yoga over Diet Culture as a Fat Person

For almost all of modern history, diet culture has dictated how fat bodies should exist, smaller, quieter, always chasing a shrinking number. It tells us movement is punishment, food is guilt, and worth is measured in pounds.

Yoga offers a radically different approach: one rooted in connection, strength, and joy. Not in fixing. Not in fighting. But in being. And it’s backed by science.

What the Science Says

1. Yoga Reduces Stress, Dieting Increases It Chronic stress wreaks havoc on the body, leading to inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and weight gain. Studies show that yoga lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) while dieting often spikes it. High cortisol leads to increased fat storage. Yoga, on the other hand, promotes calm and balance.

2. Yoga Supports Metabolic Health, Without Restriction Intense dieting can slow metabolism, leading to weight cycling (a.k.a. yo-yo dieting), which is more harmful than staying at a stable weight. Yoga has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood pressure, supporting metabolic health without the damaging effects of restriction.

3. Yoga Builds Strength, Diet Culture Weakens It Calorie-cutting can lead to muscle loss, leaving the body weaker and more fatigued. Yoga builds functional strength, improves mobility, and supports joint health—all without forcing the body into depletion.

4. Yoga Heals the Nervous System, Dieting Disrupts It Long-term dieting can dysregulate the nervous system, leading to anxiety, depression, and disordered eating patterns. Yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the “rest and digest” state, helping the body feel safe, grounded, and nourished.

5. Yoga Encourages Body Trust, Diet Culture Breeds Shame Dieting teaches us to override hunger cues, distrust our cravings, and feel guilt around food. Yoga fosters intuitive movement, self-awareness, and acceptance, allowing the body to be a source of wisdom, not shame.

Movement Shouldn’t Be About Shrinking, It Should Be About Living

Fat bodies deserve movement that feels good. That brings joy, energy, and expansion.

Yoga doesn’t demand a smaller body. It invites a fuller experience. A deeper breath. A wider stretch. A powerful presence.

It’s is so much more liberating than chasing a number on a scale.
